Crocus tommasinianus

Crocus tommasinianus, or woodland crocus, is named after Muzio G. Spirito de Tommasini (1794-1879), botanist & mayor of the city of Triest, Italy. These flowers are some of the earliest spring bloomers and they are ubiquitous in Lancaster. Just up the street from our place is a yard that is almost solid purple with thousands upon thousands of these flowers. I asked the homeowners for permission to photograph them and had a nice conversation with the lady of the house. Not only is she lucky enough to have all these flowers, but there’s also an enormous and spectacular copper beech tree on the property.

The last three days here couldn’t have been nicer. The leaden skies and psyche-crushing gloom had me to the brink of madness. Fortunately, it seems as if spring is finally here after one of the worst winters in quite some time.
