Pet Photography
I get a lot of looney ideas, but almost none of them see the light of day. This latest one may just be another crackpot endeavor cooked up by an overactive imagination, but I can’t seem to get it out of my head. I am entertaining the idea of looking into pet photography as a business. I did an internet search and found Cowbelly Pet Photography in Seattle. The business is a one-woman enterprise who loves dogs and her camera – in that order – and, with a heap of determination, is now running a successful business. Her photos are fabulous. They’re creative, unique, fun, well-executed and they really lit a bonfire under my ass. She and I have many of the same lenses and I’d only need to invest in a few pieces of equipment to get started. I’d need some practice and to learn a couple of new Photoshop techniques, but I am thinking that maybe this wouldn’t be such a stretch.
So…what do you think? This is anonymous, so be honest!

I love your pictures. I have 7 dogs and I know how hard it is to get good shots of them. I have some connections in the dog world if you get serious about pet photography. Nothing stellar but maybe something to help.

Thanks a ton Kim! Are you in the Lancaster area? What I could use right now are some dogs to use as practice. Little Buddy was never too dynamic and Sinbad, being black, is the last color I want to photograph. I’d like to do a practice shoot of someone else’s dogs just to see what happens.
And, hey, a connection is a connection and when you’re just starting out, everything counts! I will definitely keep your offer in mind.

No, I’m in Michigan. However, I play a sport called Flyball with my dogs and I know or are aquainted with lots of people in the sport all over the place. Flyball is relay races with dogs. There are two tournaments in the next month, one in Gettysburg, and one at the Lebanon Valley Fairgrounds. Check out http://www.flyball.org and search under Tournaments, Region 15. I know the team hosting the Lebanon one. I’m not sure how close they live to it, but they are wonderful people who would love to have their dogs photographed! Spectators are welcome at tournaments and you can take as many pictures as you want, but no flash during racing. My hubby is an amateur photographer. Here’s his public album http://picasaweb.google.com/bradstoecker

This is a great idea! I would love to go to one of the tournaments! I’m going to check out the website. that is a perfect event for me on so many levels -dogs, action and it’s not far from here at all. I wonder how close I could get at the tournament or if I could contact the Lebanon people and ask to show up at a practice. I am so glad you told me about this! Off to check out the photo album…

I think your pictures are great. You really capture the personalities of your dogs. If you want some practice – give a yell. I’m in the E-town area and have two photogenic poodles!

There is a place in Bainbridge that does flyball and agility training. Their website is:

Thanks Lisa, I may just take you up on the offer. I like poodles and they have so much personality. Do you have a yard or take them to a park somewhere?

Mel, I think your pictures are amazing and I think this is a great idea. Let me know if you want to take any pictures of cats. I have a beautiful himalayan that I would love to have some nice shots of.

Melody,
between our house and my in-laws, we have about 15 acres. If you’d like to bring your doggies for a visit sometime, let me know.
